The recent release of four seminal works on Dalit literature by the Gujarati Dalit Sahitya Academy marks a pivotal moment in illuminating the rich, yet often overlooked, landscape of Dalit and marginalized voices. Among these is Forgotten Sorrows, an anthology of Gujarati Dalit poetry by Shri Arvind Vegada, masterfully translated into English by Dr. Intaj Malek, which preserves the profound sorrow and resilience etched in each verse. Another anthology, Untouched Harvest, originally in Gujarati by Harish Mangalam and rendered into English by Dr. Malek, captures the raw beauty of lived Dalit experience, offering a visceral portrayal of their struggles and unyielding spirit.
Adding to these anthologies, A Critical Study of Dalit Sensibility in Selected Indian Autobiographical Narratives by Dr. Rekha Parmar delves into the deeply felt consciousness of Dalit life, exploring the raw authenticity of personal narratives as resistance against centuries-old silencing. At the launch, esteemed scholars Dr. Indira Nityanandam, Dr. Ishmeet Kaur, Dr. Intaj Malek, and Shri Pravin Gadhavi eloquently spoke on the multifaceted significance of Dalit literature in Gujarati. Their discourse underscored the Academy’s humble yet profound endeavor to globalize Gujarati Dalit literature, amplifying these voices and inviting the world into an empathetic understanding of their heritage, struggles, and humanity.
